United States Library of Medicine Semantic Network
The UMLS Semantic Network is one of four knowledge sources under development by the National Library of Medicine as part of the Unified Medical Language System project. The Semantic Network, through its 132 semantic types, provides a consistent categorization of all concepts represented in the UMLS Metathesaurus. The 53 links between the semantic types provide the structure for the Network and represent important relationships in the biomedical domain. All information about specific concepts is found in the Metathesaurus; the Network provides information about the basic semantic types that are assigned to these concepts, and it defines the relationships that may hold between the semantic types.
