Paradigm Shift

A change of patterns, models, or general approaches to solving a problem that result in a new paradigm. For example, computers have undergone several paradigm shifts in order to gain more and faster processing power at a lower cost - from electronic relays to vacuum tube, then to transistors and integrated circuits, and now on to new paradigms, such as organic and three dimensional chip designs.
