Midbrain

The middle of the three primary divisions of the developing vertebrate brain, or the corresponding part of the adult brain, also called also mesencephalon. It serves as a relay station, passing messages back and forth between various parts of the body and cerebral cortex. Many simple or primitive functions that are essential for survival are located here.
