Invisible Hand
The concept that when each individual pursues his or her own advantage, he or she is "led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention," which leads to a greater benefit for all than if he or she actively pursued an altruistic end. Originally introduced by economist Adam Smith in his book "The Wealth of Nations," published in 1776.
