It's surprizing that you read! Speaking of course from guessing your intelligence based on your grammer. Come on, we all know that rock bands have the most insightful members, and naturally we as a society value their opinions over our own.

let me guess your a psychology student with an inferiority complex. Which would explain why you feel the need to insult my 'intelligence' based on grammer. As far as rock band members beinhe least insighful, well it could certainly be worse. I wish Britney Spears was here so i could pick here brain at this very moment, im just dying to know what she thought of hair in the 80's.

Well i'm guessing you're Design student who gets confused between technology, art and their meanings to life.. Art is an expression. Technology is a means to expression. Music is an art, a form of expression. Everyone's entitles to thier opinion. What is it that makes you feel so strongly against this that you have spent the last hour at this website?

ok, the first part of that response made no sense. As far as the second point, which is my agenda against personal expression or freedom of opinion.......well that made even less sense. Neither the website or myself have any idea how that could be true. I think weve wasted enough server space here and its not much.

I just wanted to mention that I think its actually spelled 'grammar'. It did occur to me that I might be missing a slang term or something, but a web search turned up nothing.

Myself, I loved Spiritual Machines - though how much I make it mean fluxuates. My boyfriend found it a bit dry. I intend to reread it soon, after I finish the Dancing Wu Li Masters. I am so happy to be exploring my spirituality and have it be compatible with technology.

Did you guys check out an old article called "the Enlightment Bug" by Michael Dertouzos - here's a link:

http://www.lcs.mit.edu/about/enlightenment.html

I am sad to just have found out about him and to have missed him - he passed away recently. Ray wrote a short column about him.

fkxpro - You are sorely mistaken about the quality of Our Lady Peace's newest effort, Spiritual Machines. This CD is really brilliant. I think if you would take the time to really listen to some of the songs, such as "Life", "Are You Sad", or "The Wonderful Future", you would surely see the beauty of this creation. Of course, if you don't like the other Our Lady Peace CD's too, then there's not much hope of you enjoying this one. Our Lady Peace is awesome.

Your right, i havent given this album much of a chance but the little chance i did give it scared me off (just wasnt my sound). The older albums were fine by me, the "Navid style" and the whole Clumbsy album ( if thats right) were good.

I would like to add my opinion to the matter at hand:
Even though my opinion of the band may not be one of
personal like, I do feel as if they are one of great talent;
as I fell the band 'Tool' is. It is always possible to throw
an opinion out, on how terrible a someones art is, but you
must remember that the evolution of art has always built
upon other's experiences. It is part of evolution.

The music you like, including Peace, blows. However, the music I prefer is far superior to all others in emotional force, spiritual resonance, and intellectual content. Enlightening discussion people(saracasm).

Hahahaha!!!!!

Personally, I didn't care too much for OLP, but maybe I'll give it another listen.

I'm just wondering if they play standard tunes with lyrics that refer constantly to Ray (& realted topics) or if they actually utilize certain concepts (especially concerning the evolution of music) to make the MUSIC speak...if that makes any sense.

BTW: What's yer poison, Sam?

you may think that Spiritual Machines are horrible but its all a matter of opinion. Our Lady Peace changes their style every album. I in fact really liked Spiritual Machines.

Maybe you'll like the style in the next album better?

P.S. I offer my best wishes to Mike Turner and wherever his career and life will take him. (he recently departed the band under "creative and musical differences")

I just wanted to tell the person who started this, 'if your in the middle of reading a book,
don't watch the interview' you must not not have any taste, I'd do just about anything
to see Raine Maida as you call it, "drone." Don't talk about Our Lady Peace like that,
I happen to be a fan and if you don't like the music, then simply don't listen to it, Duh!

I'm listening to people droning on and praising OLP and I an't stnd listening to it. The simple fact is, OLP hasn't produced a good album since Clumsy, way back in the day. They had an original sound, the music was free and unstructured and they made amazing music. They isolated themselves for a while to "throw out everything that wasn't their own" and they ended up shooting themselves in the foot. "Happiness..." ended up a depressing half hearted attempt to create another amazing album. The music became to layered and structured and in the end, they did the exact opposite of what they had tried to do-become original. Now they sound like any other crap onthe radio. What they've made may not be terrible--but it simply can't hold a candle to both "Clumsy" and "Naveed"

OLP is suffering from an Identity Crisis. In trying to find who they were, they ignored who they were. They had a great thing going and they fucked it up big time. I'll never buy another album, because "finding out who they were" was a euphamism for "finding how to sell more albums." OLP sold out, and it disgusts me

Weird - my last post on this topic was almost a year ago (prior to @Home going belly-up!). A bit odd that it still lingers on........

While a lot of folks may not like OLP (they certainly are not my favorite band), I think they are a commendable band. Sure, "Somewhare Out There" (from "Gravity") may not be much more than a radio-ready hit, but it's a pretty good song. Compositionally speaking, they do nothing new. Speaking as a recording engineer, I can say they break no new ground there, either - though I really dig the near-flanged compression on the lead vocal (almost a vocoder with a shadow instrument - very cool). Technically speaking, they aren't doing anything new or even much challenging.

All that said, the quality of music isn't to be reduced to it's exploitation of "higher" or "lower" concepts, it's perfection in technical execution, or the like.

OLP is a competent band and they abviously feel strongly about what they are doing. With all the objections to the "drivel" that is pop radio, isn't it enough that they are solid and passionate?

Sure, I'd like to hear popular experiments with 4-D music, exporations into sonic esoterica (polymeters and bitonality and symmetrical harmony), beyondo technical wizadry, and the like. But considering the tone of many a post contained in this thread, I wonder just how many of you would notice if someone did.

Comments?

I believe every album with the exception of their latest is amazing. if you are looking for another clumsy album it won't happen. Every album is like opening up a new chapter for Our Lady peace. Each album has a theme and some people prefer one theme over another. I personally love all of them because each album has a significant affect on my life. Naveed for its eerie and strong lyrics, Clumsy for its observations of the world around us, Happiness... and the Fish because it helps me to keep my head high, Spiritual Machines for its deep insight into the future and reasurence that im not the only one in the world, and Gravity.. well Gravity sucks. There is a new guitarist, a new record producer, and different lyrics. The lyrics are all about love and emo bullshit. I want to know what happened to the Our Lady Peace we used to know? Everyday I find myself asking these questions and no matter how hard i try, i cannot rid them from my head. I am disgusted that anyone would want to do this for money.. They not only sold out to MTV but to themselves. Listen to All For You on Gravity (latest record) it will make a lot of things clear. In this song, they explain how tempting selling out can be. Listen to the lyrics and everything will start coming together. Think about what the suburban man represents. Here is something i write to all guestbooks on Our Lady Peace sights:

In a recent phone interview, 29-year-old Raine Maida weighs in on the media, gun control, the evils of television, the obsession with celebrity, you name the issue, he has an opinion. He's fed up with the trivial, disgusted by materialism and repulsed by small talk. Even the customary, "How are you today?" that follows "Hello" rankles him. He can sum it up with a line from the title track of Our Lady Peace's new album, Happiness... Is Not a Fish That You Can Catch: "Talking is just masturbating without the mess." Says he, "That, to me, just sums up a lot. Especially in the music business, so many people just talk to hear themselves talk and build themselves up to fulfil their own egos. It's sucha bullshit and if peopel would just get over that character trait, they would find themselves to be so much happier, because you're not so consumed with yourself. "If you have something to say, make sure that there's some passion behind it. Don't just tlak for the sake of talking. That's just boring and redundant. And it's a waste of time."

'wow, what a cool guy' i remember thinking. then, a couple months later, i turn on the radio and hear "hi this is raine from our lady peace and you're listening to z100"

hypocrite.

You are a dissapointed fan. I recognise the attiutude, bacuase I myself was one. I talked exactly like that. Yes, they are selling out. I happen to have an MTV clip of them performing "Not Afraid". I resumed my fan state, but not for what they are now; for what they once were. They may, in time, resume their "rebel" state seen in Naveed and Clumsy. I am showing how calm I am by spelling everything correctly (I think) and using periods rather than excalimation points. He might have actually thought that way when he said that and changed his mind later; also realize that when you're invited to perform on MTV, you're one of the more famous people on the planet--no one would deny that (admit it).

So intead of waving banners around saying Our Lady Peace ROCKS! I'm going to wave banners saying Our Lady Peace ROCKED!

And that one person was using the names John and Pual in reference to the Beatles (directed at the other person who said Raine's name is Mike, which it is).

I'm bracing for a hostile reaction.

Ash Nazg.

And Behold the Morphogenesis of Music!

The metal into String,Horn,and Trumpet...

Forged in this Sun,

And the Heavens shake,

While the Earth trembles,

And the forests scream JUPITER!!!
